This verse from Diwan (Ghazal 837:6) by Fayḍ Kāshānī, the 17th-century Persian mystic-philosopher, captures the essence of mystical self-transcendence and unity with the divine Beloved. He expresses a gradual transcendence of the self in contemplation, where the boundary between the lover and the Beloved fades away ("gradually, gradually"). As the Divine Presence grows stronger, the individual self diminishes, reflecting the journey of losing one’s ego to attain unity with the Divine. The verse implies a deep spiritual transformation—a progressive self-emptying, where the individual is so absorbed in divine love that they are not aware of their individual existence anymore.
